Guide on upgrading the hard drive on the P1510D.
The first order of business is to acquire a new hard drive preferably faster and of course larger. You can use some of the drives out of the
IPOD 60GB or even 40GB. I purchased the Toshiba 60 GB OEM drive from the following link:
http://www.nowdirect.com/direct/partInfo/part_detail.tsb?partid=23454 for $174.61 This was the best price for a new drive that I found. That is unless you paid the 150.00 to upgrade from Fujitsu.
But if at the time you were short on cash, here is a solution that works for only a few dollars more.
Once you get the new drive you have two options:
1. Install the new drive and restore with the factory default CD or you can restore from an image file.
2. Use a USB 1.8 in drive storage container (pick one from eBay or other locations for less than $20.00). This offers you the ability to clone your existing drive to the new drive and also
have a portable 30GB storage drive after.
I use Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/ to clone my drive to the USB drive. They have a free 15 day version. Then just swap out the drive and you have an instant upgrade.
To swap the drive you must first remove the three screws holding the plate.
Once this is done you can gently lift the drive up and remove the connector from the drive only. It is just slightly snug and should come apart relatively easy.
You will notice that the drive has a plastic cover along the bottom and 4 rubber adhesive feet at each corner (see below). This should be removed and placed on the new drive.
This should be done gently as not to destroy any of the edges. It is a simple procedure. Once this is done you can attach the new drive back to the cable.
A few notes: The drive only attaches one way due to the one round and one rectangular plug features. Notice the label side is facing you when done correctly (1st picture).
Also the 60GB drive is a few mm larger than the 30 GB but it fits fine.
With regard to the portable USB drive make sure you get one for the Toshiba drive and not the Hitachi. The Toshiba has a female connector while the Hitachi has the male.

mine should be delivered today! but i won't be able to play with it until tuesday...i've got new RAM and a new stylus waiting for it. maybe i will do a RAM upgrade guide (but it's pretty foolproof). |

Niether could I.
The ram should be straight forward, but there is always someone who might mess it up. Not sure how, but anytime you work on a computer there is always that chance.

Thanks Ishman, with my small hard drive there is no doubt that I'll be doing an upgrade in the near future. I'm going to try to hold out for a larger, faster drive.

Let me know if you find a newer drive that is faster and larger. It appears that many of the new ultra portable pc's use the 1.8 inch Toshiba drives. This will eventually push the technology quicker.

What's the speed of the new drive (the link is gone)? And how much faster is the experience?
And is the 15 day trial Acronis sufficient for the cloning. I wouldn't mind paying for it, but if you can do everything with the trial version, I'll take that since it would only be used once. |

I checked the link and they are currently out of the 60gb drives and only have the 30 and 40 gb in stock. You might try another vender but it might cost a little more than mentioned above. Currently all the 1.8 in drives run at 4200 RPM. I just upgraded mycapacity from 30 to 60.

Can anyone tell me the exact model # of the 30gb drive that is being removed? I might have a use for it and if so would replace it with a 60gb, otherwise probably not. :)

When I upgraded my 5020D to a 7200rpm drive - the computer got noticably HOTTER and the drive drew more power. I'm going with the larger but same speed drive - the 1510 is hot enough as it is. Seems NowDirect has them back in stock.

| Ishman, I want to say how much I appreciated your instructions. It was so easy and the pics helped. It took me about 30 min. after I formated the 60 gig Toshiba harddrive and everything is perfect including having a 30 gig external hard drive. I have bought a 60GB Toshiba harddrive to be able to experiment with the OS for EUR 120.00 at alternate.de. Problem is that I could not get the same model as was in the P1510 which is Toshiba MK6006GAH and bought a MK6008GAH which has a different connector (much smaller). I am trying to find out whether there is an adapter, waiting for response from Toshiba technical support. The drive itself is also smaller that the old one at the same capacity.
Update: According to Toshiba support there is no adapter available yet. Fujitsu told me that this harddisk would not fit. Looking at pictures on various websites, a drive called MK8007GAH might work (80GB), but they are difficult to get, usually several weeks delivery.

I understand that the upgrade drive must be Toshiba but does anyone know which external USB drives have the Toshiba harddrive in them?
Is it possible to exchange the drives? (upgrading the P1510D and then using the 30Gb as external drive instead) |

Just did that :-) The Transcend drive has the Hitachi drive inside and opening any of them voids the warranty.
I bought the MK6006GAH on eBay, after making the mistake to order the ZIF version MK6008GAH first. I was able to cancel that order.
Indeed there are plenty of 1.8" enclosures. |

I've been trying unsuccessfully to do the 60gb upgrade. I can't get it to happen. Everything goes fine until I put the cloned drive in the P1510D and then the BIOS won't recognize it. It was a former Ipod drive from ebay so all I can think of is that it is locked to ipods. It works fine via USB, but won't work as the primary drive.
I've tried re-partitioning and two brands of cloning software.
Thoughts? |

Are you sure the primary partition is active? Check in DOS mode with FDISK, which will activate it if needed.  |
